Acting Immigration Minister Alan Tudge announced the English language requirements, for people applying for partner visas.
The test additionally applies to an applicant’s life partner, if they are a permanent resident rather than an Australian citizen.
Highlights
- Australian Prime minister Scott Morrison says government will now test basic language competency for all partner/spouse visa applicants.
- Onshore applicants for partner visa applicants will be given first priority
Applicants applying for a new partner visa are required to show they can speak English Language or take 500 hours of courses before they are allowed Australian PR.
Partner visa is prepared in two stages. Initial an applicant gets a temporary visa for about two years after which they can apply for PR.
The English language necessities should be satisfied at the second stage when the partner needs to turn into a permanent resident.
Mr Tudge states that English language requirement will be much easier than the one needed to be joined for monetary migration.
The policy will kick in from the mid of next year. The obligations will apply to applicants and their spouses who are permanent residents, not citizens.
When asked about the thinking behind launching a language test for partner visa applicants, Mr Morrison said the change is an important step in the direction of empowering new migrants and to shield them from domestic abuse and work development.
