The migration division has expressed concern as the processing times for Australian citizenship applications have moved away amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
More than 16,800 people have received their Australian citizenship via virtual ceremonials during the pandemic but many more are still in queue. Figures out from the Department of Home Affairs show 75% applications for citizenship by move now take at least 23 months.
Mandeep Sidhu, Director at Rapid migration and Immigration advisor said “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation in country, all face-to-face citizenship interviews, and tests, have been put on hold. This mean to increase in overall processing times.
The department of immigration will resume in-person interviews and citizenship tests when it is safe to do so,” they said, adding together that new applications are still being received.
“Getting those awaiting periods bring down is crucial in terms of truly controlling people’s sense that their lives are evolving, and they are
able to make decisions going forward about their promise towards Australia.”
Clearing the backlog
The department of home affair said during the year 2019-20, up to 22 May this year, 175,304 people were granted for Australian citizenship – up 56% on the same period last year.
More than 750+ have got citizenship through online each day since they began, and up to 22 May, more than 16,800 people obtained citizenship like this way.
